MekkaBoy

FAQ

Short answers. If yours is not here, the CurseForge comments are the place to ask.

Is this against Blizzard's rules?

No. It is a normal addon written against the addon API, the same way a bag addon or a map addon is. It does not automate anything. It sends addon messages only to people in your party, only while a link is open, plus a one-line version check when two users group up. Nothing leaves the game client.

Where do I get games?

From your own collection. MekkaBoy includes four original games and no others. We do not supply games, we do not link to them, and we will not answer questions about where to find them. Please don't ask in the comments.

Why doesn't my game have sound?

Because an addon can't synthesize audio; it can only play sound files that already exist. The included games ship with theirs. For a game you add, you need a soundtrack pack recorded from your own copy. The tools are in the download under Tools (soundpack.py for Game Boy games, soundpack_gba.py for Advance). You need Python 3 and a few packages; the top of each script says which. Run it on your file, put the folder it makes next to the cartridge folder, and restart the client. If you don't do this, the game plays silently. That is expected.

Which games run poorly?

The ones that redraw the whole screen constantly: racing games, fast platformers, anything with big scrolling backgrounds. If we have tested the game, the Workshop tells you the expected speed before you make the cartridge.

Does it work on Classic Era, Anniversary or retail?

No. MekkaBoy is built against WoW Forever's client. We have no plans to port it.

Where are my saves, and how do I back them up?

In the addon's saved variables, which the client writes to disk when you log out or /reload. The files are MekkaBoy.lua (saves, settings, Game Boy memory valves), MekkaBoy_States.lua (Advance memory valves) and MekkaBoy_Slot1.lua through Slot4 (pasted games), all under WTF\Account\YOURACCOUNT\SavedVariables. Copy those files to back up. If the client crashes, you lose anything since the last write, so /reload after a session you care about.

Does it run on Mac?

Yes. Same folders, under /Applications/World of Warcraft/_classic_beta_/Interface/AddOns. The Workshop page works in any browser. The sound tools need Python 3, which works on Mac too.

What is the Tools folder?

Python scripts for people who want them: the same cartridge converter the Workshop page uses, the two sound-pack recorders, and a script that tells you which save chip a game uses. They contain no game data. You never need them to play.

The shelf says "no cartridge" after I added a folder.

The folder is probably one level too deep. MekkaBoy_Cart_NAME needs to sit directly in AddOns next to the MekkaBoy folder, with the .toc file directly inside it. If your unzip tool wrapped it in another folder, move it up. Then fully restart the client; /reload doesn't pick up new folders.

How do I report a bug?

Type /mb bug in game, copy what it shows, and paste it into the feedback form with what you did, what happened and what you expected. Ideas go in the same form. If you have a GitHub account you can open an issue instead. Please don't paste your SavedVariables file or a link log anywhere public; they contain your character name and your party members' names.

Does it collect any data?

No. There are no accounts, no telemetry and no network requests. This website has a page counter and nothing else. Your game file never leaves your browser on the Workshop page.

Can I send my cartridge code to a friend so we can play together?

No. The code is the game file, encoded. Your friend needs their own copy. Once you both have one, the link handles the rest.
