MekkaBoy

Tested games

Everything we have run on MekkaBoy and how it went. "Played" means we played it for hours; "starts" means it boots and runs but we have not gone far. The weight is how hard the game is on the console, 1 to 10. Anything 6 or above runs noticeably slow. This list is the same one the game shows when you type /mb tested.

"Exact" means the sound tool knows that game's music engine and records every song and effect. "Shared engine" means it records through the music engine most Advance games use, which works for most of them. Titles are listed as a record of what we tested. They are trademarks of their owners; MekkaBoy is not affiliated with any of them and does not include them.

Link play

Two players, each with MekkaBoy and their own copy of a game, can use that game's own trade and battle features with each other. Get in a party, both start the game, both type /mb link. Whoever typed it first leads. Chat tells each of you where to go in the game, which is the same place you would go for a link cable: the Cable Club in the Game Boy games, the upstairs counter in the Advance ones.

It works in the open world. It does not work inside boss fights, keystone runs or PvP matches, because the client does not deliver addon messages there.

How it works

A Game Boy link cable is a wire between two consoles that swaps one byte at a time, thousands of times a second. WoW has no wire, but it does let addons in the same party pass short messages to each other, and that is what MekkaBoy uses instead.

Each player's MekkaBoy runs their own copy of the game, start to finish, on their own machine. When the game reaches for the cable, MekkaBoy stands in for the other console: it answers the routine back-and-forth itself and only sends what actually changes hands, like the Pokémon you offered or the move you picked. The other side does the same, so both games see an ordinary cable partner and stay in step.

Nothing goes through a server, ours or anyone else's. The messages travel between the two of you through the game client, the same way a raid addon shares timers.

While a link is open, rewind and memory valves are off so the two games can't drift apart. Infrared, the wireless adapter and the Union Room are not supported.

The games' own rules still apply. The Time Capsule only takes Pokémon and moves the first games know about. Gold, Silver and Crystal open their link counters after the Mystery Egg errand. The Advance games want a Pokédex and at least two Pokémon. FireRed and LeafGreen will not link with Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald until late in the story.
